Thriving Thursday: Embracing Your Training Arc

Welcome to Thriving Thursday, Starr-Gazers. We have almost survived the week.

If you read fantasy novels, watch anime, or spend your weekends rolling twenty-sided dice like I do, you already know one of the most important tropes in storytelling: The Training Arc.

It is that crucial middle chapter where the protagonist gets completely humbled, realizes they aren’t strong enough yet, and has to put in the grueling, unglamorous work to level up. It is sweaty, it is exhausting, and it is absolutely necessary.

1. Gamify Your Grind

When you look at your real-life responsibilities—hitting the gym, finishing a creative project, or just surviving a tough semester—it is easy to get overwhelmed by how far away the finish line is. I run into this constantly when I am drafting new chapters for The Sterling Cross Files.

The trick to thriving instead of just surviving is to gamify the process. Stop looking at your workout as a chore, and start looking at it as +1 to your Strength stat. Look at your study session as +1 to your Intelligence. You are the main character; you have to put the XP in if you want to level up.

2. The Unseen Chapters

On social media, we only ever see the final boss fight. We see the published book, the viral video, or the PR lift at the gym. We don’t see the 6:00 AM alarms, the rough drafts, or the days when the protagonist completely fails.

If you are in a season right now where it feels like you are just grinding without seeing any immediate reward, congratulations—you are in your training arc. Do not rush it. The endurance you are building right now is exactly what is going to keep you alive when the real challenges hit.

3. Equip the Right Gear

Sometimes, getting into the right mindset requires putting on the right armor. Today, for me, that meant throwing on some retro track shorts, getting out in the grass, and pretending I’m training for an 80s movie montage. Whatever makes you feel capable—wear it, do it, and own it.

Your Quest for the Day

I want to know what you are currently leveling up. Drop a comment below and tell me: What is your current real-life Training Arc? Are you learning a new skill, hitting a fitness goal, or grinding through a massive project? Let’s hype each other up.
