Hitting the Wall: When Motivation Fades and Discipline Takes Over

Happy Motivation Monday, Starr-Verse.

If you look at the photos from today’s shoot, you’re not seeing the polished, perfectly lit gym aesthetic. You’re seeing the harsh midday sun, sweat, and a whole lot of rough, weathered brick. I chose this setting on purpose because it visually represents a feeling we all know entirely too well: hitting the wall.

The Physical Grind

We talk a lot about motivation on this blog. Motivation is the spark. It’s that perfect pre-workout track hitting your headphones, the adrenaline rush of a new goal, and the energy that gets you out the door. But let’s be real—motivation is fleeting. It burns hot, and it burns out fast.

Eventually, you hit a point where the muscles fail, the lungs burn, and sitting down in the dirt against a brick wall feels like the only option you have left. That’s the wall. And that is exactly where motivation packs up and leaves you. What takes over in that exact moment isn’t motivation. It’s discipline.

The Blank Page is Made of Brick

That physical wall translates directly into the creative process. If you’ve been following my writing journey, you know I’m deep in the trenches of Book 2 of The Sterling Cross Files.

When you’re outlining a new plot or drafting the first few chapters, motivation carries you. But right now, I’m untangling the evolving, messy, and complicated dynamic between Sterling and Az. Trying to write the nuances of their relationship—and mapping out the emotional fallout of a potential fracture between them—has felt exactly like staring down a brick wall. The words don’t flow. The blank page glares back at me. The motivation to write is completely gone.

“Motivation gets you started. Discipline keeps you running when the camera is off—and when the page is blank.”

Breaking Through

So, what do you do when you hit the wall, whether it’s in the squat rack or at the writing desk?

You lean against it for a second, you wipe the sweat off your forehead, and you recognize that the foundation you’ve built is stronger than the obstacle in front of you. You don’t need to feel inspired to put in the reps. You just have to put your head down and do the work. Write the terrible first draft. Grind out the final, painful set. Let discipline carry you until the motivation returns.

The wall isn’t there to stop you. It’s there to show you exactly how much you’re willing to endure to get to the other side.

Well, your still good looking. Remember sunblock and moisturize after the clean-up.

I’ve hit the wall so many times this year that I’m now in chronic depletion 🙁
