Welcome back to the Starr-Verse. If you’ve been following along with my journey for a while, you know I am a massive advocate for hitting the hard reset button. Usually, when we talk about Transformation Tuesday on this blog, we are looking at physical progress in the gym, or celebrating a massive new word-count milestone for the Sterling Cross universe. But today, the transformation we are focusing on is purely mental.
Let’s talk about the reality of the creative grind for a second. When you spend hours locked indoors, staring at a glowing screen, meticulously plotting out dark fantasy magic systems and trying to untangle the intensely complicated character dynamics of someone like Sterling Cross… your brain eventually just turns to static. You hit a wall where the words stop flowing, the dialogue feels forced, and the plot holes start looking like craters. It is the classic writer’s block, and it is entirely self-inflicted from sitting at a desk for too long.

For me, getting out into the woods is my ultimate cheat code for cutting through that mental noise. There is something incredibly grounding about trading the blue light of a laptop for natural sunlight filtering through the canopy. The humidity, the elevation changes, and the sheer physical effort required to tackle these trails force you to stop overthinking your fictional worlds and just exist in the real one for a few hours.
You have to actively transform your environment if you want to transform your mindset. I always find that pushing my physical limits on a steep incline is exactly what it takes to exhaust the anxious, over-analytical side of my brain, allowing the creative side to finally step back up to the microphone.

Eventually, the trail always leads to the water, and taking a moment to just sit on the rocks, listen to the current, and actually catch my breath does absolute wonders for the creative process. It is almost always in these quiet, unplugged moments on the trail that the solutions finally hit me. A character’s motivation suddenly makes sense, or the perfect line of dialogue for the next chapter of Wicked Assets just drops right into my head.
I’m heading back to the keyboard tonight completely refreshed, refocused, and ready to ruin some fictional lives. The pages are calling, and the Starr-Verse is about to get a whole lot bigger.
Over to you:
What is your ultimate cheat code for resetting your brain when you feel completely stuck? Are you a hiker who needs to get into the woods, a gamer who needs to lose yourself in a massive RPG for a few hours, or do you just need a really good nap? Let’s talk about it and swap strategies in the comments below! 👇
